What is Mometasone Furoate?

Mometasone Furoate is an ingredient that belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids that is used to treat symptoms of hay fever.

It helps to reduce inflammation inside the nose, helps you to breathe better and reduces symptoms such as sneezing, itchiness and a runny nose.

What is the difference between Nasonex and Mometasone Furoate?

Nasonex is a brand of nasal spray that contains the same active ingredient in the same strength.

The generic version, Mometasone Furoate 50 mcg/ spray, is medically equivalent, but is available at a much more affordable price.

How to use Mometasone Furoate?

Mometasone Furoate can be used on a daily basis. The recommended dose is two sprays into each nostril once a day. When your symptoms are lesser and under control, you may reduce the dose to just one spray into each nostril once a day.

How to use the nasal spray

Before using Mometasone Furoate for the first time, you will need to ‘prime’ the bottle by spraying the pump 10 times until a fine mist is produced.

After “priming”, just follow the easy steps below on how to use the nasal spray:

  1. Gently shake the bottle and remove the dust cap.
  2. Gently blow your nose.
  3. Close one nostril and put the nozzle of the spray bottle into your other nostril. Tilt your head forward and keep the bottle upright.
  4. Start to breathe in slowly through your nose and pump the spray once whilst breathing in.
  5. Breathe out through your mouth.

Repeat this step to apply a second dose to the same nostril and two doses to the other nostril.

After using the spray, wipe the nozzle and replace the dust cap.

Cleaning your nasal spray

  • The spray needs to be cleaned regularly and properly by removing the dust cap and pulling off the nozzle gently.
  • Wash both parts in warm water then rinse under a running tap and allow to dry in a warm place.
  • Once dried, place the spray back together and re-prime with two sprays in prep for the next use.
  • Do not try to unblock the nasal applicator by inserting a sharp object inside as this can damage the spray and you may get the incorrect dose of the medicine.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Sneezing
  • Sore nose or throat
  • Nose bleeds
  • Nose ulcers
