What is Esomeprazole and what is it used for?

Esomeprazole is the generic version of Nexium, which is a medication used to treat symptoms of heartburn and indigestion caused by acid reflux.

What is Acid Reflux and GORD?

Acid reflux is when acid finds its way back into the oesophagus, causing a burning sensation. Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is a chronic form of acid reflux, where symptoms may occur two or more times a week.

How does it work?

Esomeprazole belongs to a group of medicines called 'proton pump inhibitors', which work by reducing acid production in the stomach.

Esomeprazole reduces the symptoms associated with escaped acid flowing into the throat like the burning feeling in the chest or throat that so often characterises the condition.

How should I take Esomeprazole?

You should take one tablet in the morning with water before a meal.

For the medication to work correctly, you should take the tablet whole and not break or chew it.

What is the difference between Nexium and Esomeprazole?

Esomeprazole is the active ingredient in Nexium (the branded version) and also available as Generic Esomeprazole, but at a lower cost.

Both medications are medically equivalent in efficacy and amount.

One in ten people taking the medicine can experience the following side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Flatulence
