What is Vicks Vaporub and when is it used?

Vicks Vaporub is a topical vapor ointment used to soothe and relieve the symptoms of the common cold.

Such as:

  • Coughs
  • Congestion
  • Sore throat

It is suitable for adults and children the age of two years and older, making it a staple ointment for families.

What causes cold symptoms?

Cold symptoms are caused by a viral infection of the upper throat. It is not serious in most cases, and will generally clear by itself after a few days.

The most common symptoms of a cold are:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Blocked or running nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • High temperature

What is the recommended dosage of this treatment?

Vicks Vaporub can be used in two distinct ways:

  • It can be used as a rub, by applying directly to the chest, back or throat just before going to bed.
  • It can also be used as a vapor, by dissolving two teaspoons of the rub into hot water and then inhaling the vapours from the hot water mixture for 10-15 mins. Be careful to avoid burning yourself when handling hot water.

When should Vicks Vaporub not be used?

Vicks Vaporub should not be used if you are allergic to any of the listed ingredients. It should not be used by any patients under the age of 2.

It should also not be used on and of these areas:

  • Eyes
  • Mouth
  • Nostrils
  • Face
  • Broken or irritated skin

How should I store Vicks Vaporub?

Vicks Vaporub should be stored in a dry, cool environment that does not exceed 25°C.

Like all medicines, Vicks VapoRub can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Seek medical advice if you are experiencing any of the side effects.

Such as:

  • Redness or skin irritation
  • Eye irritation (by inhalation)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Burns at application site
