What is Alpecin Double Effect Caffeine Shampoo and what is it used for?

Alpecin Double Effect Shampoo is an anti-dandruff shampoo that treats both hair loss and dandruff.

What is the active ingredient?

There are two main components to the Double Effect Shampoo.

The first is salicylic acid and piroctone olamine, which are effective anti-dandruff agents. Together they have antimicrobial properties, antioxidant effects and anti-inflammatory action, which work to gently remove the dandruff from the scalp.

The second active ingredient in Alpecin is the Caffeine Complex with caffeine, which stimulates the hair roots and prolongs the hair growth phase.

The shampoo also contains niacin (vitamin B3) and zinc to ensure healthy hair roots.

How does it work?

The caffeine in the shampoo helps to loosen the scaly and keratinous cells and removes dandruff from the scalp. Once the dandruff is gone, the caffeine in the shampoo works at the hair follicles to promote hair growth and strengthen the hair from the root.

How do I use it?

Massage the shampoo into your scalp and leave in for 2 minutes before rinsing with water. The massage helps the scalp to absorb the active ingredients.

Do I need a prescription to buy it?

Alpecin Double Effect Caffeine Shampoo is an over-the-counter product, so you do not need a prescription and you can buy it in a local pharmacy and certain supermarkets.

How is it different from Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo C1?

While they both contain caffeine, the Double Effect Shampoo has the added function of removing the scaly, keratinous cells and dandruff from the scalp before hair regrowth.

Can I use it with Regaine or Finasteride?

Yes, you can use Alpecin alongside both Regaine and Finasteride as they work in different ways.

However, with Minoxidil (an active ingredient in Regaine), you have to keep the foam in your hair for at least 15 minutes before washing it out with Alpecin.

It is best to consult with your GP firstly before using these treatments at the same time.

Does it have any side effects?

Possible side effects can include redness and burning of the scalp.
