What is Norethisterone and how does it work?

Norethisterone tablets are used to treat various menstrual cycle issues and commonly used to delay periods. The active ingredient is Norethisterone, a synthetic version of progesterone.

Rather than allowing progesterone levels to fall as they normally would before your period, it mimics the effects of female hormones in the body by keeping progesterone levels up, sustaining the uterus lining.

This inhibits ovulation, delaying the uterus from shedding its lining and thus preventing your period.

How and when should I take Norethisterone?

The recommended dose for women of childbearing potential is 5mg, three (3) times a day, with water. It is recommended to start taking the tablets three (3) days before your expected period cycle. Do not take the pills for more than 17 days or over an extended period of time as it can have side effects on your hormone balance.

How soon after stopping will I get my period?

Your period should come within 2-3 days after completing your course of Norethisterone.

What if I don't get my period after stopping treatment?

After ceasing the tablets, it may take a few days for your body to adjust to the changes in hormone levels. If you don’t get your period within a week after completing the course, take a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy or seek advice from your GP.

Can I take Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is NOT ALWAYS suitable for all women. You should not take Norethisterone if:

Will Norethisterone protect me against pregnancy?
